Signs of Sexual Assault

  • Sadness or depression
  • Failing grades or other school problems
  • Fear of the dark or nightmares
  • Drug or alcohol abuse
  • Overly mature sexual behavior for age
  • Hurting other people or animals
  • New fears of people or places
  • A sudden change in behavior

How You Can Help

  • If it’s a child, talk to him or her in a non-threatening and non-accusatory way
  • Show concern, interest and support
  • Believe the child, no matter how difficult
  • Stay calm. Try not to panic or lose control
  • Try to preserve evidence by not showering, douching or changing clothes
  • Seek medical attention
